What Is AVR+AI?

  • Augmented Reality, or AR: the process of experiencing a digital addition to reality
  • Virtual Reality, or VR: a fullimmersioninto another world/reality
  • Artificial Intelligence, or AI: the development and use of computer applications to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence
  • HTC Vive and Oculus: state-of-the-art VR headsets

Steps toward Integrating AVR+AI into the Library and Across the Curriculum

  • An AVR+AI Library Committee has been set up with Myra Bloom as chair. The purpose is to envision and implement the immersion of AVR+AI into the curriculum and across campus via the Library.
  • The Library has set up a Virtual Reality Activity Station in the LINC onLRC-4th floor to give students and faculty the opportunity to experience virtual reality using HTC Vive and Oculus.
  • Dean Mark Roberts is chairing the AVR+AI Instructional Task Force for the purpose of creating research proposals eligible for funding by the President’s Research Fund.
  • Myra Bloom has created two VR/AR Library Guides
  • The committee has compiled and posted a bibliography of books and journal articles on teaching and instructional design using AVR+AI on the newly created VR/AR & AI in Higher Education Website.
  • The Library has made an initial foray into the use of AI by implementing Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa, which is an intelligent voice recognition and natural language understanding service similar to Siri. Available at the Library Services Desk, Alexa answers library FAQs like “How late is the Library open tonight?” and “Can I print from my laptop?”
  • VR Goggles are now available at the Library Services Desk for 4-day check out, allowing users to experience VR in and out of the Library.
