What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, typically through algorithms and computational models, enabling tasks such as problem-solving, learning, and decision-making.

Generative AI refers to a category of AI algorithms that draws on patterns learned from a dataset to generate new content, such as text, images, or music.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are a specific type of generative AI. LLMs are sophisticated AI systems designed to understand and generate human-like text across multiple languages, with applications ranging from natural language processing to translation and content generation.

Why Use AI?

Use AI as much as it helps (and as allowed by your professor), but ultimately you are responsible for every choice and everything you write. Always, follow your professor's directives when using AI.

Research Assistance
Students can gather, process, analyze, and synthesize data and research to assist in their research and writing process. AI tools can help students sift through large amounts of information and identify trends to improve their research outcomes.

Personalized Learning & Study Aid
Students struggling with a concept can use AI to provide additional examples and explanations for better understanding. They can use AI tools to streamline their research or to tackle research problems efficiently and effectively.

Conversely, AI can present increasingly complex concepts and ideas to engage and motivate students. Student learning can be supported with real-time AI conversation and feedback.

Language Learning
AI helps address challenges faced by students for whom English is a second language.

AI & the Library

This libguide offers some basic AI information and lists several AI programs, along with specific usage tips helpful for research support. The library also offers instruction and guidance on using AI for research.

  • Students may inquire at the Library Service Desk or set up an appointment to opens new windowmeet with a librarian for help with ethical AI use.
  • Faculty members may request an AI LIBBI workshop for their class by contacting their library liaison.
