About
Library Instruction (LI) will include a descriptive, not prescriptive, explanation and examples of AI use in academics.
LI will adhere to professors' directives on integrating AI in research and instructional activities at all levels. However, a core responsibility of librarianship is educating students on information literacy, including AI literacy. to support this the library has adopted a scaffoled instruction approach to integrate AI into the LIBBIs.
Flowchart: Using AI & Databases
The flowchart below provides an example of combining the use of AI and databases in an ethical research process.
The chart starts with using reference databases to get background information and brainstorming a topic in AI, then identifying and exploring databases, generating and searching keywords, developing Boolean expressions, analyzing results, and ensuring proper citation and ethical use of the research.
General Education Courses
LIBBI-102COMP, Part 2
Provide a brief overview of generative AI, prompt engineering, and basic use for finding library language, such as keywords, and resources.
Prompt Engineering (AI Queries):
- Demonstrate how to use ChatGPT to generate a list of databases and keywords for a topic.
- Explore different aspects and alternative views of topics by asking for related subtopics or questions.
- Demonstrate limitations using AI for finding research article and creating citations.
Students will begin to:
- Develop critical thinking skills to recognize how prompt engineering can impact AI generated results.
- Acquire proficiency in generative AI prompting and identifying relevant keywords and terms.
- Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of using AI for possible resources (e.g., articles and databases) for their topic.
LIBBI-303COMP
Proficiency in Prompt Engineering (AI Queries):
- Demonstrate how to use ChatGPT to generate recommended databases, keywords, and subjects for a research topic.
- Explore different aspects of topics, related subtopics, or other questions using effective prompts..
- Develop skills to use prompts to identify relevant scholars in their discipline or field of study.
Students will begin to:
- Refine their ability to construct effective prompts for generative AI to achieve desired results.
- Develop skills to prompt and identify relevant scholars related to their research topic.
- Develop a foundational understanding of AI use to discover Library of Congress subject headings for topics.
- Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of using AI.
Sr. Paper & Course LIBBIs
Sr. Paper and other course-requested LIBBIs will incorporate AI as directed or requested by the professor.
Librarians and department library liaisons are happy to collaborate with professors on incorporating AI programs for the course or specific research assignments.
