How to Find Articles

The usual way students locate articles for use in their research papers is by searching related databases or EagleSearch, the library tool that searches multiple databases simultaneously. For that reason, this page points students to the databases that are most likely to be helpful when doing biblical studies. See the research guide linked below for more tips on finding articles.

How to Limit Database Results to Articles from Peer-reviewed Journals

Whether using EagleSearch or one of the EBSCOhost databases, limit results to "academic journals" and "peer-reviewed."

Sample Search Strategies for Journal Articles on Luke & Acts

To find articles on Luke in ATLA Religion Database (listed as AtlaSeries PLUS on Database List):

Do a subject search for Bible Luke, then limit dates to 1970 to present, peer-reviewed, full-text, English (and other languages you know) journal articles.
Then narrow the results by adding keywords related to your topic.

To find articles on Acts in the same database:

Do a subject search for Bible Acts and limit as above: from 1970 to present, peer-reviewed, full-text, English (and other languages you know) journal articles.
Then add keywords related to your paper topic to reduce the number of hits further.

To expand your research, try the same searches in EagleSearch.

Select the "Philosophy & Religion" discipline before searching EagleSearch.

Theological Database
Full-text journals provided by American Theological Library Association (Atla) in many diverse areas of religion and theology. Coverage from over 30 different countries with content in 16 languages. Content includes sacred texts, world religions, interfaith dialogue, contextual and systematic theology, denominational history, ethics, etc.
Christian Periodical Index
Citations to journal articles in selected periodicals covering major doctrinal positions within evangelical Christianity; linked full-text when available.

Metzger's original citations (10.000+) are complemented by an additional 4.800+ new references, using the same basic arrangement employed by Metzger.
