How to Cite Entries for the Babylonian Talmud
Citations for Talmud entries are unique and follow the general rules below.
Example: The citation b. B. B. 73b-74a is for Baba Bathra, page 292 of the Babylonian Talmud.
Page Numbering
Use the folio and side a or b numbering (located at the upper outside corners).
Numbering for tractate pages is not taken from the standard pagination at the bottom, such as page 292.
To cite page 292, use 73b-74a.
Abbreviations
Use abbreviations for the tractate names.
Use the Alphabetical Tractate Index (tab above) for abbreviations.
To cite "Baba Bathra," use B. B.
Talmudic Version
To distinguish versions of the Talmudic tractates use abbreviations: y. for Jerusalem and b. for Babylonian.
To cite Babylonian Talmud (b), use b.
